So you’re looking for an Air Purifier for eczema? We will show you the Best air purifiers for eczema 2018.
When I speak to people about Air purifiers the first thing they always ask me is ‘Why do you need an air purifier for eczema, aren’t they for allergies?’
Yes, they are but eczema flare-ups can be triggered by a number of things and allergies are one of them along with seasonal allergies, also allergy to dust mites or pet hairs. Eliminating anything around the home that can cause a flare-up is a good idea. That’s why AIR PURIFIERS WITH HEPA FILTERS are a great idea if you suffer from eczema.
Regular vacuuming of carpets and rugs, and keeping stuffed toys clean can all help reduce the amounts of irritants surrounding you in the home. But it’s virtually impossible to get rid of all the microscopic particles that can contribute to an eczema flare. A good quality portable air purifier with a HEPA filter can capture more of these particles and become an important tool to help you control eczema. Every weapon we have in our arsenal against eczema and allergies the better.
WHAT MADE US BUY AN AIR PURIFIER?
Our son was about 4 Years old when he started to cough throughout the night, he had very bad eczema which kept him awake all night so the last thing we needed was coughing as well. We took him to the Doctors who prescribed him with an Inhaler ( Ventolin ) the doctor told us to give him two puffs on the inhaler through the night when he started to cough. So, we did, this helped a little but after a few months, his coughing just got worse, And so did his eczema! We just thought the eczema was getting worse due to him not sleeping and scratching, which in part was true.
We realized his coughing was due to his asthma which unfortunately goes hand in hand with people who suffer from eczema. They’re more likely to suffer from allergies if they have eczema. FACT!
READ OUR ARTICLE ON Eczema and Allergies, what’s the connection?
We were advised to remove anything that can hold dust like carpets and rugs, also wash cuddly toys and remove any shelves and pictures that hold dust. All this helped but it didn’t cure the coughing. We were at the end of our tether.
We finally stumbled across AIR PURIFIERS be chance. We went to the hospital on one of our regular visits to the eczema clinic and got talking to the nurse about the air conditioning in the hospital. Basically, I was complaining it was freezing in the waiting room. LOL When the nurse said she couldn’t turn it off as it was an AIR PURIFIER!
Why do you need that? I asked. She went on to explain all the benefits of having an AIR PURIFIER to control all the allergens and irritants in the air. LIGHT BULB MOMENT!
As soon as we returned home we went straight online and found that places like AMAZON had a great range of air purifiers with built-in HEPA filters to remove unwanted allergens and dust from the air.
So without blinking, we ordered one for under £150 – $200 it arrived within 2 working days. The best air purifiers for 2018 are energy efficient, quiet and very effective.
WHAT A DRAMATIC CHANGE
It took my son about two days to get used to the low humming noise the air purifier made but after that, he slept much better. His cough almost disappeared instantly. He was still kept awake most nights with his eczema but he didn’t have to deal with the coughing as well. One less battle to fight!
I think it was the combination of changing the carpet to wooden floors and removing anything that can gather dust like rugs, cuddly toys. ( He still kept his Stuffed monkey, Charlie) Nothing can make him part with that!
Here are some of the benefits of having the air purifier
- CLEAN AIR: You can feel the quality of the air coming out of the machine. Cool clean air, dust free!
- LESS COUGHING: Virtually went away, we still gave him the inhaler if he was ill or was having a flare-up to control it whilst his immune system was down.
- MEDICATION REDUCED: We don’t like to use medication where possible, he has enough creams and lotions for his eczema without needing more to control his asthma.
- BETTER NIGHTS SLEEP: Not only for my son but for us as parents, it’s hard looking after someone with severe eczema. I also have eczema so caring for myself takes a back seat whilst my son is suffering. The more sleep you have the better you can tackle the day to day routine of treating eczema.
- NEGATIVES? : The noise level takes some getting used to, buy the best machine you can afford which will have a lower noise level. And electricity cost, the cost is low but we know every penny counts so this needed to be taken into consideration.
WHAT IS HEPA?
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. HEPA filter removes at least 99.97% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns. They allow only very small particles to go through them so lots of air purifiers also have a pre-filter to capture larger particles such as pet hair. Smaller particle allergens such as pollen, mold spores, and dust will get trapped in the HEPA filter making it a good tool in the battle against allergies and eczema.
In many ways, the HEPA filter is a lot like a sieve. It is filled with tiny holes that capture microscopic pieces of bacteria and debris from the air, keeping them trapped in the filter so that only clean air can pass through ready for you to breath in. AIR PURIFIERS are different from the conventional vacuum cleaner filters, as those use filters with larger holes that only capture chunky pieces of debris. This is where the HEPA filter comes in.
They have an outer filter that works to stop and trap the larger particles of dust and other allergens before the air reaches a second filter that captures the smaller and more microscopic pieces. The second layer is made from glass fibre and doesn’t work like a sieve as most filters do. It instead uses a combination of three mechanisms to capture the particles as they attempt to move past. Plus, at low and high speeds, the particles are still trapped in the filter.
It’s important to look for a unit with a sealed system. This refers to how the unit is constructed and how well the seals or gaskets work to ensure that air entering the air purifier does not leave until it has passed through the filters. Another important feature to look for will be the ACH or Air Exchange Per Hour. The more air exchanges per hour the better the air quality. An air exchange of 4 to 6 per hour is recommended.
